Workshop: Standard Operating Proceedures for Conducting Maize Experiments

Research and agricultural professionals from Haiti traveled to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Sept. 9-16, 2018 to learn about standard operating procedures (SOPs) for evaluating plant breeding materials and variety trials.

These modules covered key topics related to conducting experiments and the role of participatory breeding in the development of new cultivars. The training was led by Martin Bohn, Ph.D., associate professor and corn breeder at the University of Illinois, and Ludger Jean-Simon, research agronomist and extension specialist responsible for the AREA Maize program.

The modules covered the basic biology of seeds, the critical stages of corn development based on the Iowa system, seed quality, seed storage and best agronomic practices.
